Shoaling and Strategic Sorcery

So Gordon wrote, what I think is certainly the best thing to come out on sigils in the last 10 years, and a large part of that is that he very clearly and cleanly explains his shoaling system in context.

Gordon and I work magic in a very similar fashion on a number of levels. We both emphasize the need not only for mundane effort to compliment magic, but for doing as much hacking and ingenuity with those efforts as you do with magic. More in fact.

The other major similarity is that we both break goals up into small steps that can be tackled with individual pieces of magic. In Strategic Sorcery I talk about the interplay between macro-enchantment and micro-enchantment. Macro-enchantment would be the one large spell overseeing a project (the only magic that most people do). Micro-enchantments are smaller spells aimed at specific steps that will get you to the goal.

To use the example of getting job, you would could do one large working simply aimed at getting a job – perhaps a Miraculous Medal Novena, or an accumulation of Mantras, or an invocation of Jupiter. Whatever floats your boat. This is the Macro-enchantment. This is followed up by Micro-enchantments supporting: personal networking efforts, resume and cover letter effectiveness, conversational sorcery for interviewing, and a post interview spell targeted at the hiring manager.

Using Gordon’s Shoaling theory, one might perform all of these actions in one step. If you wanted to you could do it after some successful networking to get the robofish boost that Gordon spoke of, you can do it after already doing some successful networking and maybe even some preliminary interviews. One might even create a sigil mandala with the macro-enchanted sigil large and at the center, and microenchantment sigils extending off into various directions for different chains of events.

Now, of course I am a proponent of multiple techniques, so I would not only use sigil shoaling in an operation, but it certainly does lend itself to the Strategic Sorcery format, and vice-versa.
