Interview with a Mystic

11 years ago I gave Gregory Peters a really hard time online about his meld of Buddhism and Thelema. Much to his credit, when he passed through New York he invited me out for drinks so we could talk like gentlemen. I was impressed with whatI saw, and while not a convert to the OSV, I understood where he was coming from much better.

I am very happy to see how his work has evolved and very much look forward to his book being released next year. In the meantime, go check out this interview with him:

In it he does something that I have been recommending for a long time, but which very few agree with: taking the Oath of the Abyss as a practice.

I would love to meet him again in Manhattan and have a drink to discuss the Abyss Experience in comparison to Rigpa.

I’ve always felt the Oath of the Abyss should be a meaningful spiritual practice for anyone who’s religious, and an interesting breaking-open-the-head exercise for anyone who isn’t. Why do people disagree with you when you recommend it?

There is a stigma about it, that it can potentially drive people insane.

The root of this is in the way that Crowley approaches the Abyss experience as a battle with Choronzon etc. IMO the final result of crossing the abyss – and the arrival into realization of non-duality on the other side, is better approached through alchemical or contemplative methods.

But the Oath of the Abyss is really a good practice and reminder that even when you are not in the trans-abyssal mentality, to at least let your mind be informed by it.

Thanks for the comments Jason. As I mentioned elsewhere, the implement you gave me back in NYC has never left my altar.
