Meditating My Way Up A Mountain

“Been a couple weeks since I did this.”

AH. rest in presence of awareness.

“Wow, hard on the thighs”

AH

“I was just sick for a week, maybe this is too much for today. Maybe better to swim today.”

AH – you pussy.

AH

“Hi! how are you? Yes it’s a perfect day for a hike”

AH – external distractions are not different from internal distractions. Return to presence of awareness

Have a good one”.

AH-

“Man – My ankles are starting to hurt”

Ah – release from distraction…

“Nope…they really hurt, can’t just release myself from this distraction”

Focus on the pain itself as the meditation – where precisely is it?

“Back Right side of right ankle”

“Can I find the specific point or muscle? Yes, nope, its gone”

“Pain is back”

“Make the stickiness of the pain itself the focus of meditation”

“AH”

few moments of clear presence…

“Weird its gone now. Is it just that I walked it out or did focusing on the tenacity of the pain itself dissipate it?” Doesn’t matter does it?

Focus Jason “AH”

Oooh maybe I should switch to Semzin of White AH rather than just using it to cut distraction…

Visualize White floating three feet in front of me…

No switching meditations mid-way! What is this armature hour?

AH

“Getting tired”

AH

“Jesus Christ, am I there yet? Maybe I will turn around and call it a day.”

“Jason*, look up. Do you see much more above you? No, ok then you are up and almost around. You have done this climb a dozen times.”

“Look, up ahead is the pine line**. You are nearly there.”

AH.

presence of awareness

“Its mostly level from here on in. You made it.”

Grin

“OK Jason, its great to feel joy, but strip it of its cause and just find the presence of awareness”

AH

Look…. there’s the rock!

Ah

OK.  Make offering to the Yul-lha and go sit on the overlook. Make offerings to four Kings and the  Garndharvas, Yakshas, Nagas, and Kunbandhas.

Eat Sandwich.

Yum.

So even a very experienced sorcerer who trained in Tibet keeps getting distracted in similar ways to his humble apprentices. Jason, I’m actually not sure if this is encouraging or discouraging…how did it make you feel when you found this out about your own teachers?

“For mental benefits of talking to yourself in third person see…”

See what? 🙂

    Fixed the links.

    Two things:

    1. First is that I am not on a cushion meditating, I am hiking up a mountain after being sick for a week, so distractions are worse than normal.

    2. Moments of clarity are longer than you might think based on the post. Its hard, not to mention boring, to write : And I was clear beyond duality for a LOOOOOOOONG time.

    3. Most of the clarity people experience after their first few stages is in fact a type of thinking that goes like “I am so clear. Really really clear. Damn I’m good at this!”

    4. For me it was encouraging to find this out about my own teachers. It is encouraging because I can see the clarity in their lives and how it informs their actions, but knowing that it is not 100% perfection makes it attainable. It also makes their fuck-ups and occasional ego driven moments understandable.

Hard and boring it may be, but it definitely makes it lean more towards “encouraging” for me. So it was worth it 🙂

But jokes aside, thank you for the post. It is helpful and refreshing to sneak a peek into the master’s mind.

Actually, I find it rather encouraging, myself. I tend to do this on the job, or when I’m out walking, and it looks much the same, save that my ‘clear’ states are significantly shorter (seconds to minutes).

I think there’s a tendency, especially for those whose experience with meditation is almost completely informal (no retreats, no one-on-one instruction, like myself) to conceive of there being an eventual mastery of meditation achieved where the mediator no longer deals with distraction at all. (Some magical training books outright state that you’ll pretty much -have- to hit that level –Draja Mickaharic’s Magic Simplified for instance.)

It’s kind of a relief to see someone with significant experience still dealing with distraction — even tempted to make a beginners mistake! It sort of puts things into perspective, and gives a additional context to the practice.

Thank you for sharing this, Jason, I found it both illuminating and useful.

I’d select to make use of some with the content on my blog whether or not you don’t mind. Natually I’ll give you a link within your internet blog. Thanks for sharing.
