Spell Spread
When we work magic it spreads out under the ground of reality like a rhizome. It sends its shoots up in places that we cannot always predict. It also effects us, even if it is work that we are doing for others. Yes, you can take a bath, do a cleansing, banish the living fuck out of your room by drawing every geometrical shape you can think of in the corners; but ultimately the work you do will start to surround you and effect your life. This is why I keep a keen awareness of what I call “Spell Spread”.
Are you trying to bring things to you? Wealth, love etc? Are you trying to run a business that increases its visibility and expands its sales? If so, then maybe you need to stay away from doing a lot of Hot-Foot work that drives people away, work that keeps things invisible, and curse work that cultivates anger and resentment. This isn’t a moral posture, its a practical one. If I am doing a lot of attraction and increasing work, I tend to not even want to do protection work for clients because of the competing spell spread. Likewise if someone is in desperate need of protection magic, the first thing I have them do is stop anything that opens them up to spirit communication and psychic experiences*
The reason that the Global rites we do in the Strategic Sorcery community work so well is spell spread. It filters throughout the group and cultivates that force among the participants. Every now and then I will talk to a student who has a bad reaction to the global rites, and find out that the main thrust of their practice is about fighting things and combating things – counter to most of the global rites.
Am I saying that if you want to attract wealth and love and health that you should never lay down a curse? NO. If you are doing things worthwhile in this life, you will once or twice run into a problem that needs a wrathful solution. That is what those hyssop baths and banishings are good for: removing the stink of asafoetida and brimstone from that nasty work that you had no choice but to resort to. You opened the door to those spirits that revel is fucking up peoples shit, you made your offering, and you closed it again. If however you are always dealing with those spirits, always approaching things through the most fierce and bombastic means possible, well, don’t be shocked that peace and prosperity elude you.
Again, I want to stress that this is a practical consideration, not a moral one. There are plenty of people who live in places where survival is a lot more tenuous than it is in middle class America and Europe. There are a lot of people who’s jobs entail standing at the line between chaos and order. There are exorcists and specialists who live and breathe this shit all day long for good and noble reasons.
The good thing about spell spread though is that there is more than one way to accomplish just about any goal. There are ways to harness anger and angry spirits and channel it into prosperity magic by removing obstacles. There are also ways to overcome obstacles with the powers of increase, and attraction. There are even ways to eradicate enemies with flowers.
Whatever you are up to, just be mindful of the spread.
