TECHNO MAGIC

One of the things I love most about Asian magical systems is that it does not position itself against technology in any way. People in the west have gone so far as to tell me they cannot light ritual candles with a lighter because they were not invented in whatever the time was that they are all hot and turned on by. By contrast you can get electronic prayer wheels or make offerings to Rahula to help you with computer problems.

I just received an Omamori of Inari from a dear friend of mine that just came back from a year in Japan, which of course prompted me to do some Shinto research when I found this little beauty in the picture above. Its a jōhō anzen kigan 情報安全祈願 blessed memory card that you can buy from Denden Shrine in Kyoto.

At that shrine you can pray to Myojin, the Kami of Telecommunications and electricity to cless memory cards, as well as RFID wallets and so on. This is the kind of thing that can get lost when we try to hard to re-construct a system. It is wonderful to recover broken links to the past, as long as we don’t lose our Sorcerous links to the present in the process.

So tell me, how does technology feature in your magic?

Most of my technology is non-electronic, but I still love figuring out clever mechanical stuff with my tools, altar, etc. I was actually working on a collapsible altar, similar to an easel box (with folding wooden legs) a little while back.

My favorite example of Magical electronics is still the setup described by Rufus Opus where he has the LED illuminating his scrying crystal, and using the metal talisman as a part of the electrical circuit.

Well, since I practice Psionic Radionic Magick technomagick is pretty much what I do. From hard drives to radionic machines to magnetic headbands with strobe light 3rd eye ray beams.

Ha! I even like using electric candles when I’m doing conjure style candle spells just because I’m perverse like that.

I’m not very tech savvy but I love to utilize ambient electronic music to get into a calmer mindset during ritual study, preparation, and meditation. Also, using LEDs if candles cannot be used. I simply enjoy the color and action of candle flame, overall. Of course, my rituals are very often written using a word processor, and my journal is online. As my space is limited, I often utilize online altars and devotional sites. I find them quite helpful, much like I would feel visiting a church, or temple when abroad.
I have had the same thoughts regarding Western.magic, compared to Eastern magic. I did not know how deep it goes.

I have an almost identical omamori that I got at Kanda Myojin, a Shinto shrine in Tokyo, when I was there last year. I put it on my desktop PC. I gave another one to my main Japanese astrology student and he thought it was hilarious and love it! Typically omamori are super traditional, so these are a bit unusual.

I use electric candles at times when unguarded living flames would be risky from a firepreventive point of view.

And St. Isidore of Seville has proved very willing to protect my computer. For me saints work better than planetary och kabbalistic methods when it comes to my computer. I still feel a little bit confused over my recently newfound syncretism, which is based on Religio Romana, heretic Christianity, Buddhism, Kabbalah and Meso-Druidry, but it works. I have second thoughts on my former ideas of ‘purity’ in the choice of religiomagical practices.

I have some texts of my personalised grimoire on my iphone.

I’ve not touched on using too much tech for my own work yet, but I’ve been looking at producing music for meditation/ritual via electronic means.

Apps. I use my tablet and smartphone a lot. I have Evernote for journals/notes/ideas/etc. I have google sky map for astrological things. I use a compass app. I have a planetary hours app I use a lot. I have an email service that tells me when it’s time for Resh. I read off of it during rituals. I save places of power in my google maps app. There is so much that the smartphone or tablet is good for. I think of it as my external brain.

Oh and electric candles are amazing when you don’t want to burn down your apartment.

Ditto on the radionics. Is it bad to say Uncle Chuckie’s name in conjunction with that? He embodies some of the worst of the chaotes. Come to think of it, I remember seeing a picture someplace of the Pact (IOT) teleconferencing a ritual.

Enchanted a laptop with a busted display to do the heavy lifting on mantras for me.. Just ran it subliminally 24/7 with the intent that it was me doing the chanting.

Took a broken 12″ TV and turned it into a scry station. Pillaged the rest of the parts for another project.

I had a googlemancy program bookmarked that I used occasionally instead of trying to track down a deck of cards.

Rather fond of adding some additional protections to my cryptokey and Torr connection, along with whatever inprivate or proprietary software I’m using.

I’m seriously debating stealing a chapter out of the transhumanist playbook and getting an RFID chip installed in my hand. Definitely would go heavy on the protection, healing, stealthing, etc enchantments, plus a lil’ something extra for what I intend to use it for…

I consider a computer almost essential back when I was experimenting with space/time magic. It really helps with stuff like hypercubes… And as a research tool it can’t be beat.

There was a couple of interesting groups along these lines on LJ back when LJ was a thing, that had a lot of ideas and resources.

Love your course, BTW.
