The Testament of Solomon Recension C
The Testament of Solomon is one of the earliest documents recounting magic attributed to Solomon. It dates between the 1st and 5th centuries CE – the same era as the Greek Magical Papyri. It is THEE major source of Solomonic Magic, the first to list a catalogue of Demons, bound by Solomon’s ring and seal, and which angels had dominion over them.
What I did not know until last week is that some of the copies of The Testament of Solomon provided seals for the demons as well as names. Here, for the first time in English is a translation of Recension C by Brian Johnson, along with a forward by David Rankine.
The footnoting is extensive and provides real insight into the history of the document and its place at the very beginning of what eventually became the Solomonic Tradition. I read the 64 pages in a couple of hours, but I suspect that I will be returning to this text many times in the future.
