CYPRIAN: Clearing the Waters

There are a lot of people writing about St Cyprian these days, but the person who is shedding the most light on his magical history has to be José Leitão. I think a lot of people are familiar with his translation of The Book of St. Cyprian: The Sorcerer’s Treasure, the first English translation of one of many Cyprian grimoires that have been popular in Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries for many years.  I think less people are perhaps aware of his follow up Opuscula Cypriani: Variations on the Book of St. Cyprian and Related Literature which is nearlt a thousand pages of translated books, unpublished manuscripts, and inquisition records dealing with Cyprian. Of course through both of these we have Jose’s commentary to provide both context and wisdom.

Earlier this summer he published yet a NEW book Clearing the Waters: A Monograph on Saint Cyprian Divination from the 17th to the 19th Century.

This book is not just a collection of Cyprianic divination methods: it is an investigation of a mystery. Among the vast amount of Cyprian material are several incantations referring to a Seven Year Voyage by Sea made by the Saint, and Seven Lots he cast for his Divine Wife. In this book José Leitão explores the meaning of the seven year voyage and seven lots, and collects all Cyprianic Divination methods in one place. These range from several systems of reading playing cards, to hydromancy, to rituals for them all.

If you are interested in historic divination systems, Sorcerer Saints, or both, this is definitely a tempting tome you should procure!
