What to drink for Planetary Rites

I am participating in RO’s planetary rites series and having lots of good stuff coming up because of it. I am also hunkering down to weather out the coming Frankenstorm that is set to arrive in my neighborhood early tomorrow evening.

For some reason, the combination of the two has me thinking about Alcohol. Specifically, what I would recommend imbibing for different planetary rites.

Here is what I have so far:

Luna: The Moon demands something Witchy and herbal that strikes at the deep mind. Strega Liqueur  was the first thing that came to mind. Strega of course means Witch and this drink was invented in Sicily in 1860 was first marketed as a Witches love potion.

Mercury: I pretty much knew which drinks I wanted for which planets when I satt down to write this, but Mercury eluded me. I finally decided that Brandy, being both one of the earliest distilled drinks and one that has been used in all kinds of tonics and medicines was a good choice. Armagnac specifically is the earliest type of Brandy distilled in France and was reputed to remove redness from eyes, cure hepatitus, gout, and cankers when drunk. It was also used as a rub for curinbg wounds and paralysis. Cardinal Vital du Four claimes that “when retained in the mouth, it loosens the tongue and emboldens the wit, if someone timid from time to time himself permits.” If that is not mercurial, I don’t know what is. I am ordering up some Baron de Lustrac Cepage Bacco Armagnac right now for my rites.

Venus: This one was a no-brainer. Venus is the wormwood star and its color association is most often listed as green. Absinthe’s primary active ingredient is wormwood and it is famously known as the “Green Fairy”. For more of my thoughts on the wonders of Absinthe read my article “Occult Secrets of the Greem Fairy”. For a truly GREAT Absinthe, purchase a bottle of Jade Liqueurs “Nouvelle-Orleans” Absinthe Superieure

Sol: What better to celebrate the sun than a sip of Chartreuse 1605 Liqueur d’Elixir? Chartreuse of course is made by Carthusian Monks in the Chartreuse Mountains of the French Alps. You have probably seen one of the cheaper bottles of it gathering dust in the cordial section of your local liquor store. The Chartreuse 1605 is a specific recipe that the monks came up with in 1605 to celebrate the return of a manuscript concerning the Elixir of Life. As with all types of Chartreuse, the recipe is a closely guarded secret known only to two monks at a time.

Mars: Smoke and Oakum’s Gunpowder Rum  It’s Rum infused with gunpowder, hot chilies, and tobacco – the incense of Mars. Do I really need to explain it any further? The last time I drank this I sprouted muttonchops and fought a duel with flintlock pistols at dawn.

Jupiter: Johnny Walker Blue. A lot of Scotch Drinkers get hung up on the single-malt thing, as if that is a primary indicator of a quality Scotch. I assure you it is not. A single malt surely has a more distinct flavor, but sometimes that flavor is stale ass. Many blended Scotches are blended to keep costs low, but not all of them – enter Johnny Walker Blue. It is SOOOOOOO smooth. And, you know, the label is blue. Jupiter and all…

Saturn: I wanted a Vodka for Saturn because while it seems to be the drink of choice in the Northernmost darkest reaches of human civilization. While a black liquor might be more Saturnian, there is something about a perfectly clear drink that fits it as well.  Crystal Head Vodka is certainly not the best Vodka on the market. To tell you the truth, I don’t even think it’s a good Vodka at all. BUT. It is sold in a Crustal Skull Bottle, which makes it my drink of choice for Saturn.

OK. I want to hear from you guys now. Drinks and Planets, tell me what your thoughts are.

I’m no drinker, but most beers seem pretty martial to me. I suppose some of the really sweet ciders and syrupy framboise brews might have other associations.

Actually I have a bit of a conundrum with that. My brother is a felon and he’s living with me while he’s on parole. Soooo… no alcohol allowed in the house. Therefore, I’ve had to make due with winging it. Some things I’ve tried are:

Moon: Cow’s milk, water
Mercury: Anything blended, especially herbal teas
Venus: Slightly warm Ovaltine, mulled cider
Sun: Orange juice or any other sweet citrus juice, sun tea.
Mars: White grapefruit juice, tomato juice with a bit of Dave’s Insanity Sauce.
Jupiter: Kombucha (plain, not TOO fermented)
Saturn: Very concentrated espresso, rye kvass

Idea: Dig through Agrippa and find suitable tea herbs for each planet.

Oh, this is fun. I like your suggestions. Here’s my list – you’ll see I have a sweet tooth, and a penchant for liqueurs:
Sun – Grand Marnier
Moon – Pernod or Sambuca (I know some attribute anise to Jupiter, but I consider it more Lunar, and these liqueurs especially, since they turn milky when water is added)
Mercury – Creme du Menthe or Kaluha
Venus – Chambord
Mars – Southern Comfort fiery Pepper or ginger brandy or beer (though I must try that rum you mentioned)
Jupiter – Sapling Maple Liqueur
Saturn – There’s a tamarind liqueur I’ve been meaning to try, but Dubonnet would be my first choice (made with quinine)

This I need to meditate on, for me it all depends of the effect of liqueur on my mind.
For Saturn I probably would go with Gin. Because, quite frankly, it tastes like DEATH and I always freeze up and become STAGNANT for few days and promise myself that this was the last TIME.

Could you briefly outline how you’ve been doing the planetary rites, also if you ask for anything in particular or just soak up the currents?

Moon: Herbal tea of rosemary, virgin olive oil, milk or soy milk, sake, anisette, ouzo.

Mercury: Herbal tea of parsley or cinnamon, Coke or Pepsi, energy drinks, sherry.

Venus: Herbal tea of thyme or coriander, pomegranate juice, fig juice, sparkling wines.

Sun: Honey dissolved in hot water, orange juice, herbal tea of ginger, ginger ale, white wines, moscatel wines, brandy, cointraeu.

Mars: Nettle soup, hot chai without milk, sports drinks, gainers, Irn-Bru, bitter, tequila, bourbon.

Jupiter: Apple juice, pineapple juice, grape juice, plum juice, rhubarb sauce, cider, amarone wines, red wines, port, lager, calvados, whisky.

Saturn: Herbal tea of cumin, stout, gin n’ tonic, genever, vodka.

There are several beverages I do not know how to classify. Take grappa, for instance. Its source is stone and peel of grapes. That would make it Jovial, but the taste is rather Martial, isn’t it? And take Chartreause: Mixed ingredients = Mercurial, but the colour would lead me to deem it Veneric. Coffee, tea, cocoa products and rum are difficult to classify as well.

I don’t normally drink and conjure, but when I do…

For those that have philosophical issues with distilled liquors, there’s a wonderful list of wines with planetary associations in “The Elixir of Virtue” section of Denning & Phillips’ Planetary Magick. The herbal associations in Agrippa tend to be a bit convoluted in terms of making tea, and there’s always the issue of historical name ≠ common name ≠ species name ≠ what you’re actually brewing: a more modern herbal might be called for (Cunningham is good for this, if you proceed mindfully (i.e. look at what Jason’s done above and apply the same process to the plants you choose in your application)).

Me, I’m far more scent oriented than flavor oriented; tasting means something different for a chef than for a civilian. I’ve done planetary work long enough that I can often call to mind a scent to evoke a state, but I prefer the other way around: I let the spirit coming to the call to bring to mind a scent appropriate to its nature. The coffee is just a neutralizer and cleaner-of-slates after it serves its function as scrying pool: that’s what those beans in the jars are for at the perfumerie/stinky-stuff-store, to reset your nose between sniffing samples. So if I get up at sunrise and have a strong garlic-ginger-cinnamon smell come to mind as I make contact, either I’ve made Indian food the night before and haven’t cleaned up properly or I’m having a conversation with a Solar spirit of a certain rank in the celestial hierarchy. Like color and sounds, there are scales and harmonics to scent that also act as “tells” for a spirit to exploit as identification. Flavor can be nuanced to do the same thing, but my initial instinct tends to be along the lines of “more acid, salt stable, reduce 15% more, gelatin” or working out a pairing for the drink. Taking me to a wine tasting is obnoxious…

I’m not even going to get into the issue of tobacco or other smokables – I’m still trying to recover from the last cigar I had.

Moon: meads, esp. spiced
Mercury: Champagne & other “wines that foam”
Venus: red wins
Sun: schnapps, esp. cinnamon…also grappa
Mars: I love your rum idea (& would add Barbancourt), but also: tequila & bourbon (both often seem to be fight fuel)
Jupiter: Any significantly aged cognac (such as Louis XIII)
Saturn: Krupnikas (Lithuanian honey liquor…it’s got the thing you were going for with the location, & it’s got the benefit of the bees/third sephiroth association)

er…wines, not wins

Absinthe for Venus is interesting.

Personally I would have to sort of exclusively assign it to the Moon because apparently wormwood is a mild psychedelic, In addition to being closely related to Mugwort. And it’s got Anise?

In my experience, Mercury is quite fond of Fireball brand cinnamon flavored whiskey. http://www.fireballwhisky.com/index.cfm

I’d also drink absinthe in the moon and champagne in venus.

Jupiter : Mountain Dew – Voltage. It’s bright blue, it’s covered in lightning bolts, it wakes me up, and I can still drive safely afterwards!

Goldschlager for the Sun. Maybe Jager for Saturn. Alize Rose for Venus. My family drinks Luna di Luna wine all the time (yeah we’re cheap lol) but I think the name is all that’s lunar. Maybe white wine can be lunar. I’ll have to think more about this but this is fun.

I personally don’t drink, but in Quimbanda the different types of alcohol we give the spirits bring about a different vibration or manifestation.

For example champagne for the sweeter loving , Wine to bring out the somber, Whiskey’s to solidify and fortify the presence of the spirit. Interestingly Absinthe brings out the darker side of the Malei line of spirits.

The effects of Alcohol–being a spirit itself–on spirit and man in terms of magical working is interesting.

Not doing the planetary rites, but there is a Frankenstorm so I’m drinking Dark and Stormy’s from a skull mug. (Dark rum, ginger beer muddled with ginger root.)

Good choices, Jason. Writing a spirits column, myself, I would say you’d have an excellent side career doing the same. I’d also suggest wines from a traditional p-o-v. I’d also think that a Sun rite with fine champagne would be nice, too!

When the hurricane abate, I suggest you write a thread about comparative planetary music. Although Holst’s ‘The Planets’ work well, to a certain extent, for me, I prefer Johann Pachelbel’s Canon for Mercury and Richard Wagner’s Ouverture of ‘Tristan and Isolde’ for Venus. Since Holst didn’t write any movements for the Moon and the Sun, I usually make use of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Hymn to the Sun. I have also experimented with gregorian chant in the way Agrippa suggests.
